To ensure an efficient tax preparation process, please provide all relevant documents, including W-2s, 1099s, 1098s, valid identification, dependent information, and receipts for deductible expenses.

You may also contact us if you have questions.

Do you offer e-filing services?

Yes, we offer e-filing services to make the tax filing process quick and convenient for our clients.

How can I reduce my tax bill?

The tax code offers various methods to manage your tax liability through tax adjustments, deductions, and credits. Tax deductions enable you to reduce your taxable income, while tax credits directly lower your tax liability.

For individuals earning income through employment, taxable income can often be reduced by contributing to employer-sponsored retirement plans, such as a 401(k), or to an individual retirement account (IRA). Additionally, if you have access to a high-deductible health plan through your employer, you may also be eligible to contribute to a health savings account (HSA) or a flexible spending account (FSA).

These accounts allow you to contribute pre-tax dollars for investment or savings purposes, or for specific qualified expenses. As a result, these contributions can lower your taxable income and provide savings on your overall tax obligation.

If you have dependents, you may qualify for the Child Tax Credit, a partially refundable credit designed to help offset the costs of raising a child. For 2024, this credit provides up to $2,000 per qualifying child and directly reduces your tax liability on a dollar-for-dollar basis. Additionally, the Child and Dependent Care Credit can offer up to $2,100 for qualifying care expenses incurred while working or seeking employment.

Should I itemize my deductions or take the Standard Deduction?

For the 2024 tax year (filed in 2025), the Standard Deduction is as follows:

  • $14,600 for Single filers and Married Filing Separately
  • $21,900 for Heads of Household
  • $29,200 for Married Filing Jointly and Qualifying Surviving Spouses

To maximize tax savings, taxpayers should calculate their itemized deductions annually and compare them to the Standard Deduction. Our team carefully evaluates both options to ensure clients receive the most beneficial deduction, minimizing tax liability and maximizing refunds.

How much do you charge?

Our fees are primarily based on the complexity of the tax return, which may vary depending on factors such as income sources, deductions, and credits. The type of tax return—whether for an individual, business/self-employment, or a prior-year review with consultation and tax advice—also influences the overall cost.

As a special benefit, we offer a flat-rate fee of $125 for Teachers, Police Officers, Firefighters, and City of Fresno employees. Additionally, Senior Citizens and College Students receive even lower rates.

For all other clients, we remain committed to providing competitive pricing that is lower than major tax preparation firms and national chains. We also offer a free, no-obligation estimate to ensure transparency and confidence in our services.

Can I pay with my refund?

You have the option to use your federal refund to pay your Freedom Taxes preparation fees.

A small processing fee will be charged by the bank facilitating the transaction when the IRS processes your return.

The Freedom Taxes preparation fee will be deducted from your federal or state refund (if applicable). The deduction will be made from the first refund received that is sufficient to cover the total fees.

To qualify for this payment option, you must:

  • Have a federal refund large enough to cover the tax preparation fees.
  • Provide a valid U.S. address.
  • File your tax return electronically (e-file).
  • Ensure the name on the bank account matches the name on the tax return.

What kind of deductions do I qualify for?

Most taxpayers qualify for the Standard Deduction or itemized deductions, which significantly reduce taxable income.

Employees may deduct contributions to IRAs, HSAs, and FSAs, as well as student loan interest, mortgage interest, state and local taxes, and more.

Self-employed individuals and small business owners can deduct expenses such as home office costs, self-employment taxes, supplies, equipment, insurance, and utilities.

Can I deduct medical expenses?

The IRS allows taxpayers to deduct unreimbursed medical expenses each year if they exceed 7.5% of adjusted gross income (AGI). Eligible expenses include preventative care, surgeries, dental and vision care, mental health services, prescription medications, medical devices, and travel costs for medical care.

The amount you can deduct depends on your income and whether you itemize deductions or take the Standard Deduction.

For example, with a $100,000 income, you can deduct medical expenses exceeding $7,500 (7.5% of AGI). If you have $10,000 in qualifying expenses, you can deduct $2,500 as part of your itemized deductions.

I had a baby at the end of the year. Can I claim the baby on my taxes?

A baby born in 2024 can be claimed on your 2024 taxes. When we ask how many months your newborn lived with you, always answer the whole year, even if your baby was born on the last day of 2024. The same holds true for any health care coverage questions if your newborn was insured from the date of birth.

I just completed my return and found that I owe the IRS money. What should I do?

File the return by the due date even if you can’t pay all of the amount owed. Pay as much of the amount owed as possible and the amount of interest and late payment penalty will be reduced.

Can I request to make installment payments on the amount I owe?

Yes. If you cannot pay the full amount due with your return, you may ask to make monthly installments. However, you will be charged interest and a late payment penalty on the tax not paid. We can advise you further on what other options may be right for you after reviewing your tax information.

If I drop my return in the mailbox before April 15, is the return considered timely filed if the IRS receives it after April 15?

A return delivered to the IRS by U.S. mail after the due date for the return is considered timely filed if the return was postmarked on or before the due date of the return. This rule also applies to certain private delivery services designated by the IRS, such as UPS and Federal Express. To come within this rule, the return must be postmarked on or before the due date.

I have already filed my return and now I have received another Form W-2 or other tax document. What can I do?

If you discover that you omitted income, claimed incorrect deductions or credits, failed to claim eligible deductions or credits, or used an incorrect filing status, you should file an amended return. Individual amended returns are submitted using Form 1040X. This is a common occurrence, and Freedom Taxes specializes in preparing and filing amended returns to ensure accuracy and compliance.

How can I check on the status of my refund?

Use this tool to check your refund. Your refund status will appear around:

  • 24 hours after your current-year e-file return has been accepted by IRS
  • 3 or 4 days after you e-file a prior-year return has been accepted by IRS
  • 4 weeks after you file a paper return

Where's My Refund? | Internal Revenue Service

Taxpayers can call: 1-800-829-4477 or 1-800-829-1040

I received an IRS notice. I’ve contacted the IRS at least three times about it, but the problem still hasn’t been fixed. What can I do?

Since October 1998, the national toll-free Taxpayer Advocate Program (formerly the Problem Resolution Office) has provided assistance 24/7. You can reach the hotline at 1-877-777-4778 for support. If you are experiencing or anticipating significant hardship due to IRS regulations, you may also contact the program for assistance.

Why is it taking so long to get my refund?

The IRS typically issues most refunds within 21 days of receiving a tax return, but this does not apply to those claiming the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) or Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). Under the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes (PATH) Act, refunds for these filers cannot be issued before mid-February. The IRS has stated that most early EITC/ACTC filers will see a status update on the "Where’s My Refund" tool by Feb. 22. Refunds are expected to reach bank accounts or debit cards by March 3, assuming direct deposit is chosen and no other issues arise. Delays may occur if the return requires further review or additional information, and the IRS will contact taxpayers if this is the case.

(Our clients on average get refunds within 5-14 business days and may qualify for Advance loans)
